For Starters there is the 2000 year old Shrine of Lord Vishnu, the Janardhana Swamy temple, and The Papanasam Beach at Varkala, is believed to clear the body and the soul of all sins, hence the name ‘Paapanasini’ (killer of sins). Thousands visit the beach to perform “shraadh” for the departed souls and take a dip in the holy waters. Legend has it that sage Narada was approached by a group of mendicants who confessed to having sinned. Narada threw his “ Valkkalam ” (the bark of a tree which the mythical sages used to wear) into the air and the place where it landed was named Varkala. The mendicants were directed by Narada to offer their prayers in this beach for redemption from sins ... Many little surprises like this await you at Varkala.
